Essential requirements must be met before transporting nuclear gauges by a business or a carrier company. Private and Commercial carriers need both to comply with the rules and guidelines that are provided for them. Private carriers own the goods (nuclear gauge) being transported, and the transportation of the goods is incidental to their regular business activity. A company that owns a nuclear gauge and transports it to and from job sites in the course of business is considered a private carrier. Common and contract carriers, on the other hand, are “for hire” carriers whose primary business is the transportation of goods for others. It’s vital and crucial to meet all the requirements since these are delicate materials.
Among the important things to keep in mind is reading the applicable Canadian Nuclear Safety and Control Act (CNSA), and lATA regulations. The CNSC Act information can be found here. Acquire the lATA Dangerous Goods Regulations from the lATA online store here.
Here are some basic things to check when transporting gauges:
1. ) First, any gauge which is to be transported must be properly shielded. The shielding on these gauges is necessary for their design. It is the operator’s responsibility to ensure that the shutter is in the “closed” position.
2.) The gauge must be in a TYPE A package and a copy of the TYPE A package testing results must be available. The gauge should also need to be transported ONLY in a Type A shipping container. A physical inspection should be completed by the operator to verify that all hasps and hinges are in place and fully functional and that there are no holes or punctures in the container.
3.) Properly mark and label the transport package. Check if the gauge is properly blocked, braced and secured for transport.
4.) The package must be properly loaded and secured in the vehicle.
5.) Ensure that the operator carries the proper paperwork and that he/she is wearing his/her dosimeter.
6.) Secure and always remember to have the following documents when transporting nuclear gauges:
